Pelvic floor is defined as a collection of muscles and ligaments, whose main functions are supporting pelvic floor organs, assisting in urinary and fecal incontinence and it has a great importance in sexual intercourses as orgasms. Pelvic floor often weaken after giving birth and with menopause.

There are different types of exercises to strengthen and exercises our pelvic floor muscles thus today we are going to talk about a peculiar way to exercise: through the use of heels.

As is well known, specialist advice women against heels at any time due to they have been linked to healthy problems such as backache, knee pain, bunions and arthritis among others. Nevertheless, it has been found that heels can contribute some benefits.

In a study, Dr Maria Cerruto; an Italian urologist, presented the results of her study of 66 women under the age of 50. She found that those who held their foot at a 15 degree angle to the ground (two inch heel) have a good posture and the muscles were at optimum position, which could improve their strength and ability to contract.

“Women often have difficulty in carrying out the right exercises for the pelvic zone and wearing heels could be the solution,” she said. “Like many women, I like high heeled shoes; they make you appear more slender and taller,” she added. “It is good to know they have potential health benefits so we now hope to prove that wearing heels during daily activity may reduce the need for pelvic exercises.”

However, we must emphasize the fact that heels over 4 inches, specially stilettos, are harmful to the back, a risk for twisted ankles and they can damage your pelvic floor. Besides, you cannot walk properly therefore it is not very elegant.

In any case, there is no evidence these studies are 100% accurate so we recommend that women under the age 50 wear heels a maximum of 2 to 3 inches, and women over the age of 50 wear heels from 1.5 to 2 inches at most. Wearing comfortable shoes with moderately heels and changing shoes and heel´s height often is important to prevent health problems.
