Things you should know about your vagina

Vagina is a natural part of our body but people do not pay enough attention to it and do not speak about it openly. In this post, we will explain some important aspects that you should know to familiarize yourself with it.

First of all, we are going to differentiate the vulva, which is the outer part of the female genitals, and the vagina, which is inner cavity. We can find the vagina, the uterus, the fallopian tube and the ovaries inside the internal genitals. The walls of the vagina are stuck each other and they separate when something is inserted in it.

If you want to know your vagina, you can put a mirror opposite your vulva or you can introduce a finger in it. You will feel that the walls are rough and if you introduce the full finger, you will feel a smooth surface and slightly hard; that is the uterine cervix.

Things you did not probably know about your vagina.

The vagina is between the bladder and the rectum, and it is held by the pelvic floor.

There is a vaginal ecosystem which has the ability to keep itself clean. After menstruation or sexual intercourse, vagina lubricates naturally to get rid of death cells.

In spite of the fact it can be annoying, your vagina sweats in order to protect itself from the heat and friction.

It is not very recommended to wax or shave the pubic hair in an extreme or total way as it could lead to infections or abrasions. Remember that pubic hair is protecting your vagina.

Vaginal discharge is perfectly natural, clear color and odorless. But pay attention because you could have an infection if it has an unpleasant odor, is yellowy or greenish or you feel stinging. Having a good hygiene is essential to prevent these situations, and in case having an infection, check with your doctor as soon as possible. A quite common infection is bacterial vaginosis. It is often treated it with an ointment for you and your partner.

Although people do not usually talk about it, it would not be surprising if you suffer from pelvic organ prolapse at some point in your life. It is the condition where the organs such as the uterus, vagina, bladder and/or rectum slip out of place. It is not very serious but it can affect you daily life so we recommend you to check with a specialist.

Sexual intercourses will help you to have a healthy vagina. With a long period of abstinence, your vagina will become weak and the internal tissues will get dry. Consequently, sexual intercourses could be painful.

Vaginismus is a sexual dysfunction in which pelvic floor muscles close involuntarily in a manner that it does not allow to insert anything in it. Check with your doctor to treat this problem.

Exercises to strengthen your muscles

Kegel exercises strengthen your pelvic floor avoiding from urinary incontinence. Several times a day, you can contract the pelvic muscles for about 8 seconds. Next, release the muscles, count 10 seconds and start over again. You can do it sitting or lying until 10 times

These exercises are fantastic, but careful as if you squeeze your backside, you will not be working your pelvis muscles.

False myths

A lot of people think that heels strengthen the vagina. The truth is very different due to high heels can damage and descend the uterus.

Women should not douche as it reduces levels of helpful bacteria in the vagina. Some women say that with douches they feel clean and fresh and it is true but douches alter the pH, increasing the risk of infections and it could even complicate pregnancy. As we already know, vagina has an ecosystem to keep itself clean.
